We are a husband and wife duo who live to capture the lives and loves of our clients. Based in Raleigh, NC and traveling the world telling people's stories one click at a time.
We met and fell in love with each other on Nantucket- an island just off Cape Cod where on a whim Jocelyn decided to apply for a job managing a luxury B&B without ever having stepped foot on the small strip of land. Ryan, the manager at the time and doing photography part time, hired her and the rest, they say, is history.
We were married in Tom Nevers on Nantucket just a little over a month before we decided to pack up our belongings and head south to start a full time photography business and, as it were, a family. We operated under the name Ryan Midgett Photography, Ryan’s original business name from Nantucket, until we finally agreed on a new brand that encompassed both our personalities and style. Thus, Jocelyn & Ryan Photography was born. It is simple, classic and genuine. Just two people who love each other and what they do and want to share that with the world.
In addition to photography, our other great love is our daughter, Addison, who lights up our life in ways we could never have imagined! We love the outdoors, fishing, spending summers at Jordan Lake or the coast, and enjoying the brilliant colors of fall in the mountains near Asheville. We are lucky enough that our job takes us to different corners of the earth allowing us to explore new places, challenge and play with our craft, and capture the one element that binds us all together in this life: love.

WELCOME!
Nantucket has many reasons to make our top 5 list as it is an unbelievably gorgeous yet quaint New England island where time has almost stood still along its cobblestone streets and Hydrangea lined picket fences. The fact that it is the island we met and fell in love on is what truly makes it a permanent fixture in our hearts and minds. Ryan first came to Nantucket as an adorable one year old, and continued to take family trips to the island through college. He loved it there so much he decided to leave his less than satisfactory post college job on a whim to see if he couldn’t make that beautiful island of memories his home. Fast forward 5 years, and he was working as a manager at a luxury bed & breakfast on the island while photographing part time when Jocelyn walked in one typical April Grey Lady day to interview for the assistant innkeeper position. As fate would have it, she was hired on the spot. Six months later, after a little drama (don’t the best love stories have some?!) and a very busy season they officially started dating. It didn’t take Ryan more than 3 months until he proposed to her on top of a dune at Dionis Beach at sunset while they were both supposedly trekking out to snap some photos. September of that same year they were married on the beach at Tom Nevers on a blissfully balmy day and it could not have been more perfect. Just one month after they were married and the season had ended, they packed up their lives in a U-Haul trailer and took their formally sand driving Jeep Wrangler down to North Carolina. Nantucket, however, will always have our hearts and we take trips back as often as we can and plan to ensure our daughter loves it just as much as we do!

NANTUCKET
Easily the best thing that ever happened to us in our life other than meeting each other is when our daughter, Addison, came into this world. She decided, 1.5 weeks early, that enough was enough and that she wanted out in May 2014 and just before midnight on that fateful day our lives were changed forever. Watching her grow and explore this world around her and trusting in us to not only keep her safe but to support her as she develops her own sense of self is one of the greatest gifts life can give you. She is a fiery, stubborn, smart, strong and sassy young girl who keeps us on our toes and reminds us every minute of every day that life is short and every moment deserves to be savored. Even the moments she decides that yogurt is best enjoyed smeared all over your body, and Chex are really just fun toys that break into a million pieces when you step on them. Nothing is more exciting, scary and humbling than raising a child and absolutely nothing compares to feeling those tiny arms wrap around you to snuggle even if she is using it as a tactic to avoid bedtime. Ryan and I each lost a piece of our hearts when she was born, and every wedding we go to we are reminded that one day it will be hers’ and that this bride once was a little girl just like Addie. Life truly does pass at breakneck speed which is why we are so passionate about photography: it is the only way to stop time for just a moment to capture the memories that too easily fade.
Our Daughter
Food is a passion in our household, and Jocelyn is actually a classically trained professional chef who graduated from The Culinary Institute of America and still works as a private chef during the week. While Jocelyn tends to lean more towards whole, nourishing foods and Ryan towards whatever tickles his palate, we both love to cook and enjoy food together and to teach Addison to enjoy the same. Food is such a huge part of our lives. It not only nourishes us and powers our bodies to move through this life and the demands we place on it, but it also brings a sense of community and family with it. Cooking and eating together is something that often gets lost in today’s world where everyone seems to be too busy to sit down (or get off their phone), but we believe that it is a time to be cherished and shared even if it is only 10 minutes. Every night we are home we sit down with our daughter with no phones and catch our breaths from the day and reconnect with each other.
FOOD
Rods and reels have been a part of both of our lives since we can remember. Ryan grew up surfcasting for Blue Fish at Great Point on Nantucket almost every summer while growing up and into adulthood while he lived there. Ryan even took his groomsman and some family members up to Great Point the morning before our wedding to get in one last cast as a single man. Jocelyn grew up taking trips to Colorado fly fishing for Rainbow and Brown Trout and their family’s lake houses in Minnesota and Canada trolling for Walleye and Lake Trout. She even spent 40 days on a NOLS trip backpacking and whitewater canoeing in the Brooks Range of Alaska spin casting for Salmon (of which she caught an 18# one!). We plan to buy Addie her own practice rod this summer so she can start learning the other family trade as fishing, and the water, will always be a constant in our lives no matter where we live.
FISHING
We are lucky enough that our career often allows us to travel to some exciting locations, most recently Cancun and Chicago, but we also love to travel for pleasure. Ryan has a deep love for history and enjoys delving into the past and would love to travel to Europe to explore some of the ancient cities and the secrets they hold. Jocelyn’s travels tend to focus more on outdoor adventures between backpacking Europe in her late teens, to trekking the Brooks Range in Alaska, scuba diving in the Bahamas, and finding just about every hiking, kayaking, and camping spot in every place she has ever lived. We both want to instill this same passion for exploration and adventure in our daughter and teach her that the world is a place to be experienced in person!

I can't say enough great things about Jocelyn and Ryan Photography. Not only are they the most skilled photographers we have ever met, they went above and beyond to capture our special day. Our wedding was planned for Saturday October 8th and Ryan came to the house in the midst of a Hurricane to start the getting ready photos. Hurricane Matthew shocked us all and was much worse than we expected. Our church started taking on water and we had to postpone the wedding until the next day. Ryan told us not to worry and that he would come back out again to capture our day. We decided to go ahead with the wedding the next day since the other vendors were not able to work with us at a later time. Ryan came back out again and was able to capture the most beautiful in the moment pictures. Jocelyn and Ryan Photography is certainly a first class, professional company that my husband and I will recommend to all. We are so thankful we went with their company!

I cannot say enough positive things about Jocelyn and Ryan. They are such a great team to work with and they made everything so easy for us. They never missed a moment at our wedding- even captured moments that I forgot about! Your wedding day will be a blur at the end of the night because so much is happening. It is important to have a good photographer (or 2 in our case!) to help you recap the night. Our photos turned out beautiful and elegant looking. We got a handful of pictures the very next day to share on our social media sites. A majority of them were back within the month but ALL of them came back within 6-7 weeks which is a very quick turn around time, especially during wedding season! You will not be disappointed with this selection.
